Head of Sustainability Reporting | NatWest Group

Location: Edinburgh (Hybrid)
Level: Senior Manager / Leadership

Role Summary

This is where finance meets climate accountability.

You are not just reporting ESG metrics.
You are controlling how the bank proves its climate credibility to regulators, investors, and the market.

At this level, reporting is not administrative.
It is regulatory exposure management.

  • Lead and evolve the bank’s climate and sustainability reporting strategy
  • Oversee disclosures across annual reports and regulatory filings
  • Align reporting with global frameworks and internal strategy

2. Standards, Regulation & Governance

  • Implement evolving standards such as:

    • UK Sustainability Reporting Standards (SRS)
  • Build and maintain robust reporting control frameworks
  • Ensure disclosures are audit-ready and regulator-compliant

3. Controls, Audit & Assurance

  • Own the control environment for sustainability reporting
  • Lead engagement with internal and external auditors
  • Ensure data integrity, accuracy, and assurance readiness

  • Manage complex, cross-functional reporting processes

5. Transformation & Reporting Innovation

  • Optimize and automate reporting processes
  • Lead transformation initiatives in reporting systems
  • Build scalable, future-ready reporting infrastructure

Candidate Profile

Core Experience

  • Strong background in:
    • sustainability / ESG reporting
    • financial reporting or governance
    • regulatory frameworks in banking
  • Experience influencing at senior and board level
  • Proven ability to build systems, not just operate them

Technical Expertise

  • Deep knowledge of:
    • TCFD
    • UK SRS (S1 & S2)
    • broader ESG disclosure frameworks
  • Strong understanding of audit, controls, and reporting governance

Leadership Capabilities

  • Strategic thinking with execution discipline
  • Strong stakeholder management across complex organizations
  • Ability to drive change in high-pressure, regulated environments

What This Role Really Is

Let’s strip it down.

This is:

  • the control center for ESG credibility in a bank
  • the bridge between sustainability ambition and financial reality
  • the function regulators will scrutinize first when things go wrong

Because in banking:
If it is not reported correctly,
it does not exist.

Strategic Context

  • Sustainability reporting is becoming mandatory, regulated, and audited
  • Banks are under pressure to prove climate commitments with real data
  • Frameworks like TCFD and ISSB are reshaping financial disclosures

NatWest is positioning itself within this shift, supporting clients in the transition to a low-carbon economy

Reality Check

This role is:

  • highly technical
  • deeply regulatory
  • extremely visible

You are not just compiling reports.
You are managing regulatory risk disguised as reporting.
